Peter Ravn
Peter Ravn is a Danish artist who started painting after achieving success in the music, design, and video industries during the 80s and 90s. Raven shows a certain aesthetic reminiscent of music videos and the compositional elements show a strong relation to the principles of design present in much of contemporary graphic design. Ravn’s paintings display a cold irony as well as an element of humor. He commonly paints white businessmen in suits and by putting them into unbelievable positions the viewer is forced to approach the subject matter in a new way. The paint handling displays both a casual yet masterful understanding of the medium. Ray Bradbury once wrote in his book “Zen and the Art of Writing” that in order to create a story one must first develop a character and then thrust them into an environment. Controlling their every move and becoming the puppeteer of their existence. Ravn certainly explores an interesting character with his businessmen paintings and it will be interesting to see where they end up next.
